Do you know that in the worst cases of lower back pain nerve problems, surgery may become an option? Surgery becomes an option once the condition stops responding to all forms of conservative and alternative treatments — and it can relieve pains caused by grave musculoskeletal injuries or back problems.
Now, the good part is that not all surgeries require hospitalization. Some can be performed under localized anesthesia, in a doc’s office. There are disadvantages to surgery, however. For instance, it’s invasive. Aside from that, not all invasive surgeries for lower back pain nerve problems are successful. Moreover, it will take months after the surgery for the patient to heal fully. Healing may not be complete, too, as the patient can suffer loss of flexibility permanently.
Here are some of the procedures commonly performed on patients.
Discectomy. This is one of the most common ways to get rid of pressure on nerve roots from a bone spur or bulging disc. The surgeon will take out a little piece of the arched and bony spinal canal roof—called a lamina—to remove obstructions.
Foraminotomy. In this procedure, small bone pieces of bones over the nerve are taken out through a tiny slit. This allows surgeons to remove the blockage, relieving whatever pressure has been put on the nerve.
Spinal fusion. Too often, lower back pain nerve problems are caused—if not aggravated— by a weak spine. With spinal fusion, doctors can strengthen spines and prevent movements that cause pain. The downside to this procedure is that the patient can lose spinal flexibility. Moreover, recovery is lengthy because bone grafts need time to grow and afterwards, fuse together the vertebrae.
Now let’s be clear about this: surgery is NOT an option for you while other options exist. Because of the invasive nature of surgery, it should only be done on patients with neurologic disease that’s highly progressive or with damaged peripheral nerves. Bottomline: there are better—and perhaps, safer—ways to treat lower back pain nerve problems.
